Dear April: Unfortunately, the type of drywall damage you describe is quite common. Fill the crack with new drywall compound, and apply a thin coat of compound to the wall surface where the old tape was removed. Just because the drywall compound packaging says it will dry in 15 minutes, doesn’t mean it actually will.
